Start
everyday with a desire, a prayer for Vision.
Open you eyes - all senses - in
a book, record your encounters - past,
today.
End result : you will become more aware of life and beauty.
Discipline yourself to draw daily -
it must be a habit. But draw for yourself - as practice - as a pianist
practices. Date your drawings. Draw everything, anything.
Use a small book for "road maps" paintings;
- they can be but don't have to be enlarged. Write down a few words/thoughts.
Look at Hopper's work, Charles Burchfield,
Paul Klee, Delacroix - not at the technique but at the artist's vision.
Stand in awe at his vision.
Delacroix said, "Anything can be a painting. The real painting
is within oneself."
Read and reread "The Art Spirit" by Robert Henri.
Make it a second Bible.
Master your techniques and materials
- that takes twenty years - and you will have complete freedom for
expression of vision.
Experience all of the Arts - good music,
poetry, theater, dance, literature.
Find a mentor: a teacher or master whom
you respect, whom you can consult, with whom you can grow. He does
not necessarily have to be an artist; he does not have to be alive - i.e. an author, a painter, a philosopher;
but he must have Vision!
Become a lover - a passionate lover
of the splendor of creation and the beauty of the human life.
